Fewer Cell Phones, More Mini Computers…

So I’m in the market for a new cell phone.  I love the iPhone, but I love my carrier, Sprint, even more.  As I read the latest headlines about Sprint’s 4G network and watch YouTube reviews, it’s apparent I won’t be buying a new cell phone, as much as I’ll be buying a mini computer that makes calls…

Anymore, looking at the specs of a cell phone today is like looking at the specs of a laptop 5 years ago.  Wide screen WVGA display, video camera, 1 GHz processor, Operating System, 512 MB RAM, etc…  It’s crazy!  As these little devices get more powerful and become more mainstream, mobile advertising will only become more and more viable as a marketing platform.  As an advertiser, this is an exciting trend…

cell-phoneNot only will we be able to reach our audience as they search from their laptops, we’ll now be able to reach them while they’re checking email, playing Tetris, or walking past their favorite coffee shop.  Imagine getting a coupon on your phone for a $1 off your favorite coffee as you walk or drive past a nearby location…  This isn’t intrusive marketing, it’s simply the direction in which technology is taking us.

Google, for one, seems to agree.  Just recently, they released an announcement informing their advertisers of a new way of advertising - Pay Per Call.  With the massive display’s of the latest phones, we’re now enabled to select and call a phone number directly from the phone’s mobile browser.  Under this new Pay Per Call platform, if a mobile ad contains a phone number that you opt to call, the advertiser will be charged.  The cost per call will be consistent with what the advertiser would pay for a click from it’s search engine.

In summary, the advancement of mobile technology should be exciting for all.  From an advertiser perspective, I’m excited because I will soon have the ability to effectively market to my client’s audience wherever they may be.  From a consumer perspective, I’m looking forward to receiving highly targeted marketing information on my phone, dependent upon my location.

Now, I just need to decide on that new phone.  I mean, mini computer…

Thanks for listening,

Matt
