Whether you develop websites for a living, or market them as I do, “The Smashing Book’ is a must read.  Sven Lennartz and Vitaly Friedman introduce the latest website fundamentals in a way that makes just about anyone believe they could design a knock out site.

Covering everything from modern user interface design, to pixel perfect layouts utilizing the Fibonacci Sequence, to Typography best practices and even ways to increase online conversions, the book just rocks.  Having not built a website myself since college (yikes…), I was able to follow their thought processes so much so that after the first 100 pages, I took a break simply to run an online price check of Dreamweaver CS5.  It was simply that good.

Why should everyone reading this blog also read “The Smashing Book?”  Because if you’re reading this, you are either into website design, online marketing, or simply care about the online performance of your business.  For this very reason, “The Smashing Book” will benefit you.

Even though I don’t develop websites for a living, I feel it’s important to know as much as possible about things that indirectly pay the bills.  If I sold mufflers for a living, it would benefit me to understand how a car runs.  Same situation here…  By knowing the latest and best in web design fundamentals, I make myself that much more valuable to my clients by providing them with the latest and most effective strategies in web design.

Now the next time I need to review a client landing page to determine what could be hindering conversion rates, I can pull the Fibonacci Sequence out, and actually make it sound like I know what I’m talking about.
